Grease Abatement Program

Grease abatement bagsThe Grease Abatement Program conducts education and outreach to Dallas residents to reduce the amount of fats, oils and grease (FOG) in the sanitary sewer system through the Cease the Grease campaign. FOG causes blockages in sewer pipes resulting in sanitary sewer overflows (SSOs). An SSO is when untreated sewage is released into the environment before reaching the wastewater treatment plant.

A grease blockage causes wastewater to back up in a pipe and flow out of manholes. Untreated sewage can then flow into storm drain inlets, creeks, lakes or rivers. Most SSOs are relatively small and can be stopped and cleaned up quickly. If not addressed, SSOs can result in property damage, strong odors, and environmental, health and safety problems.

Cease the Grease reduces SSOs by:

  • ◘ Building awareness of FOG issues for Dallas residents and the Dallas business community.
  • ◘ Conducting a multi-media education and outreach campaign to decrease FOG entering the sanitary sewer and encouraging used cooking oil recycling.
  • ◘ Building a coalition of advocates including business leaders, elected officials, corporations, neighborhoods and other like-minded groups
  • ◘ Teaching our youth proper FOG disposal and recycling behaviors early, thereby improving the quality of life for all in Dallas
  • ◘ Assisting apartment managers with FOG education, recycling and training
  • ◘ Working with regional stakeholders such as the North Texas Grease Abatement Council (hyper link to their website)

All presentations, trainings and tabling by Cease the Grease are free for Dallas Water Utility rate payers. Please visit the Calendar Page for availability and reach us through the Contact Page.
